Each year, Tides Institute for Diversity in Sports publishes well-read reports on diversity in sports. These report cards primarily detail the hiring practices in front-office positions and coaching within the major, professional sports leagues and NCAA athletics.
While this is a very necessary piece of work, there remains a huge opportunity to explore diversity the sports marketing agencies and sports related companies that leverage the success of minority (and non-minority) athletes to generate income for their own businesses.
In the area of sports marketing, most major brands and companies rely on the consult from firms that SEEM to be primarily made up of white males. It would be interesting to explore the diversity makeup of the major firms like IMG/WME, Octagon, CAA. Maybe this is now the time for a new report card.
